Assistant United States Attorney

Our mission is to protect the citizens of Kansas from terrorism, crime, and unlawful discrimination, enforce federal laws and advance the interests of the U.S. government, provide federal leadership and serve as a catalyst for improving law enforcement through training and public education, and perform our duties with integrity, professionalism, and respect for the citizens we serve. These positions are located in Wichita, Kansas.

Assistant United States Attorneys in the Criminal Division represent the United States in both the U.S. District Courts and the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals in all cases involving violations of federal criminal statutes. The primary areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to, the prosecution of complex drug trafficking crimes, transnational organized crime, violent crime, firearms offenses, immigration offenses, and economic crimes such as wire fraud, mail fraud, and bank fraud. Our team works closely with federal, state, and local investigative agencies to disrupt serious criminal threats facing our community. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Security Requirements: Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. In addition, continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. Residency Requirements: Assistant United States Attorneys generally must reside in the district to which he or she is appointed or within 25 miles thereof. Selective Service: If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, you must certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under the Selective Service Law.

Qualifications Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. Degree, be an active member of the bar (any U.S. jurisdiction), and have at least 3 year post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience. United States citizenship is required. Preferred Qualifications: Preferred qualifications include felony jury trial experience. Applicants must also demonstrate superior analytical ability; have strong research, writing, and courtroom skills; independently exercise fair and sound judgment; follow all Department of Justice and United States Attorney's Office policies; exhibit the ability to work in a supportive and professional manner with other attorneys, support staff, and law enforcement agencies; interact professionally and effectively with opposing counsel; handle matters in court persuasively and justly on behalf of the United States of America; and be devoted to excellence. You must meet all qualification requirements upon the closing date of this announcement.

Salary Information

Assistant United States Attorney's pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of basic pay is $63,163 to $165,209 and the range of total pay is $73,939 to $193,394 which includes 17.06% Rest of U.S. locality pay and covers Wichita, Kansas.

Relocation Expenses

Relocation expenses will not be authorized.

Travel: 1 to 5 nights of travel required per month.

Type of Position: All initial attorney appointments to the Department of Justice are made on a 14 month (temporary) basis pending favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
