Custodian

The job of Custodian is done for the purpose of maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe facility for students, staff and the public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; and minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure.

Essential Functions

  • Arranges furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and special events.
  • Complete safety training and implement and follow all health and safety policies (e.g. blood born pathogens, cleaning solvents, floor care, first aid, maintenance training, etc.) for the purpose of receiving information on new and/or improved procedures.
  • Cleans assigned school facilities with proper chemical use (e.g. classrooms, offices, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, grounds, locker rooms, gymnasiums, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
  • Duties include but not limited to the following: sweeps, dusts, strips, scrubs, disinfects, mops, polishes, waxes, buffs and vacuums hallways, stairs, classrooms, and offices; empties all inside and outside trash containers; assists with periodic or emergency classroom cleanup duties
  • Evaluates situations (e.g. involving staff, students, parents, the public, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Inspects school facilities for the purpose of ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and/or identifying necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
  • Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities.
  • Paints interior of classrooms, offices, restrooms, etc. for the purpose of maintaining an attractive facility.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and/or minor repairs/replacements for the purpose of ensuring availability and safety of facility.
  • Prepares facility for daily operations (e.g. opening gates, building access doors, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring facilities are operational and safe for occupancy.
  • Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage, injured and/or ill students, alarms, graffiti, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning educational environment.
  • Secures facilities and grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, equipment loss and potential liability to organization.
  • Picks up and delivers equipment and supplies.
  • Performs all laundry-related duties.

Other Functions

  • Ability to perform other tasks and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal, Custodial Supervisor, or other administrative staff.

Job Requirements

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

SKILLS are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: basic computer skills, operating equipment used in industrial maintenance including electrical cleaning equipment, common tools, etc.; proper selection and use of cleaning chemicals; and adhering to safety practices.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and understand multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: methods of industrial cleaning; preserving floors, walls, fixtures, etc., cleaning materials; safety practices and procedures.

Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; providing information and/or advising others; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is some opportunity to impact the organization's services.

Working Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting up to 50 lbs, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 0% sitting, 75% walking, and 25% standing. The job is performed under some hazardous conditions. Work may be in any and all weather/temperatures and lighting conditions that require a job to be performed. May be required to wear protective equipment for exposure.
