Street Maintenance Worker

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Street Supervisor, the Maintenance Worker performs unskilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of city streets and alleys. The employee in this position patches pavement cuts and potholes, places concrete and asphalt, and cleans the job site. This employee cleans catch basins, concrete forms and tools, and performs similar laborious tasks. This position is subject to on-call rotation.

Essential Functions

  • Operates small and medium sized trucks;
  • Patches pavement cuts and holes in streets, seals cracks, and applies surface treatments to pavements;
  • Uses small hand and power tools such as shovel, broom, pneumatic pavement breaker, or circular saw;
  • Operates small motorized equipment including ground compactor, plate compactor, concrete saw;
  • Applies pavement markings;
  • Cleans catch basins and drainage channels;
  • Places and levels concrete and asphalt;
  • Cleans job site, concrete forms, and tools;
  • Removes snow and ice from roadways;
  • Sets up and removes work zone traffic control devices;
  • Removes traffic hazards from roadways;
  • Performs the duties of the Equipment Operator when required;
  • Performs equipment, sign, and signal maintenance;
  • Cleans vehicles and equipment;
  • Responds to after hours emergencies as needed.
Marginal Functions
  • May occasionally collect solid waste;
  • Trim trees as needed and within job description parameters;
  • May apply vegetation control chemicals to pavements;
  • Other related duties as deemed necessary or as required.

Position Requirements

Experience: No experience required.

Education: High school diploma or GED required.

Certifications/Licenses: Possession of a valid Kansas driver's license required. Will be required to obtain LTAP Workplace, Jobsite & Equipment Safety and LTAP MUTCD For Technicians Certificates within one year of employment. Will be required obtain National Incident Management System (NIMS), IS 100, 200 and 700 certificate within six months of employment. Additional education or certifications as approved or determined by the department head could result in a regular stipend to employee's salary.

Skills: Knowledge of the operation, maintenance and safety guidelines of equipment used. Ability to use tools, power tools, and small motorized equipment. The ability to understand and follow oral and written directions. Ability to efficiently operate a calculator, camera, electronic tablet, computer, cell phone, measuring devices, and other related equipment. Must be proficient with Microsoft Office suite, and have the ability to learn other software as needed.

Communication: All forms of communication are a requirement of this position, including verbal, written, and electronic. This communication shall include peer to peer, peer to supervisor, and peer to customer.

Problem Solving: Limited problem solving exists in this position.

Decision Making: Limited decision making exists in this position.

Accountability: Employee is responsible for performing assigned duties efficiently and for proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment.

Personal Relations: Frequent contact with other city employees and some contact with the public. Continual exposure to the public while working on streets.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None.

Residency Requirement: Must live within 30 minutes of intersection of First & Main streets per google maps during normal traffic conditions.

Working Conditions: Vibrations encountered while operating small motorized equipment or hand tools associated with the physical demands required for Street Personnel. Vibrations could be encountered only by the upper extremities (UE) while using hand tools or by the whole body while operating small motorized equipment. This position performs various tasks which are seasonal. The worker is exposed to outdoor elements and inclement weather. The worker walks on uneven terrain and surfaces that may be slick from rain, ice &/or oil. Works under general supervision.

Physical requirements: Street Maintenance Worker's physical job demands include occasional lift of up to 100 lbs from floor to waist; frequent lift of up to 80 lbs floor to shoulder; occasional lift of up to15 lbs floor to overhead; occasional carry of up to 70 lbs, 25 feet; frequent carry of up to 40 lbs 25 feet; occasional push/pull force of up to 60 lbs; occasional climb up to 29" ht; frequent forward reach; occasional overhead reach; frequent bend; frequent bend/crouch; occasional crouch/kneel; frequent neck flexion; occasional trunk rotation; constant hand coordination; constant foot coordination; frequent balancing; frequent sitting; constant standing and constant walking.
