About the Responsibilities

As a Controls Engineer In Training, the functional level is to provide CAP an internal method to train engineers for future filling of Controls Engineer positions. An Engineer-In-Training (EIT), through applied training, mentoring, formal training, and job assignment, will gain a thorough understanding of the operation, engineering, and maintenance requirements of the CAP. The EIT will help identify solutions to technical engineering problems, insure that technical documentation for those elements to which the incumbent is assigned are accurate, complete, and retrievable by those who require such documentation, to carry out or participate in the design of solutions to the engineering problems assigned, act as a productive team member on project teams, and to bring general engineering knowledge to bear on the engineering problems facing CAP.
Provides reliability engineering services as a member of an asset management team responsible for the reliability, availability and maintenance of ICS equipment at pumping plants, water conveyance systems and facilities for the Central Arizona Project (CAP).Identifies failures through root-cause failure analysis for ICS equipment.

Some of the duties include:

1. Provides productive work, or assistance to other senior staff, for the purposes of planning and constructing new features of the CAP and modifying, operating, and maintaining existing features of the CAP, through application of general engineering knowledge. This includes the preparation of, or technical review of, plans and specifications, internal Work Packages, and materials and cost estimates.

Provide control systems design including but not limited to:
  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC)
  • Sub-Station Automation Controllers (RTUs)
  • Human Machine Interfaces (HMI)
  • Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&ID)
  • Control schematics and wiring diagrams
2. Supports and receives mentoring from higher grade level engineers in the execution of all assigned work.

3. Actively seeks out opportunities for expansion of engineering knowledge and experience and exposure to, and participation with, other CAP departments and divisions.

4. While working with other engineers, participates in the preparation and coordination of technical studies and investigations. Communicates the outcomes in a complete and professional manner to all appropriate levels.
About the Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering.
  • Must possess and be able to demonstrate good communication and professional interpersonal skills.
Required Minimum Technical Qualifications:
  • Familiar with design and hardware around control system design.
  • PLC software development experience (manufacturer preference is Rockwell)
  • HMI software development
  • Design experience of 600V or less systems
Required Certifications or Licenses:
  • Note: Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam within one year of hire is required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and maintain a good driving record.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position and requires physical testing.
